Overview
Last checked: September 2026. US visa fees, wait times and entry rules change often. Always confirm the latest details on travel.state.gov and the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan website before you apply.
The United States is a top destination for Pakistani students, tourists, business travellers and families visiting relatives. Pakistan is not part of the US Visa Waiver Program, so Pakistani passport holders need a visa for every trip. Most short visits use the B1/B2 visitor visa, which covers business meetings (B1) and tourism or family visits (B2).
The Biggest Challenge: Waiting Time
Interview appointment waiting times at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate General in Karachi can be many months long for visitor visas. The embassy recommends applying at least six months before your planned travel, and not buying non-refundable tickets before your visa is issued. Check the current waiting time on the official appointment website before you plan your trip.
Student (F and J) visas are usually given priority, so their waiting times are often shorter.
US Visa Costs
- Visa application fee (MRV fee): $185 for B1/B2 visitor visas and F-1 student visas. It is paid before the interview and is not refunded if your visa is refused.
- Visa Integrity Fee: a $250 fee created by US law in 2025, charged when a visa is issued. Check travel.state.gov to see whether it currently applies to your application.
- SEVIS fee (students only): $350 for F-1 students, paid online before the interview.
The Interview
Most applicants must attend a short in-person interview. The officer decides whether you are a genuine visitor who will return to Pakistan. Most refusals happen under section 214(b) of US immigration law, which means the officer was not convinced of your ties to Pakistan. Answer honestly, make sure your answers match your DS-160 form, and bring documents that show your job, family and financial situation.
Interview Waiver for Renewals
Some B1/B2 applicants may qualify for an interview waiver, for example if they received their previous full-validity visa when they were at least 18 years old and are renewing within 12 months of its expiry. Check the embassy website for the current rules.
Entry Restrictions
US entry and visa policies have changed several times in recent years. Before applying, check the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan website for any current restrictions that may affect Pakistani nationals.
