Canada Visitor Visa Refusal: 8 Common Reasons and How to Avoid Them

Last checked: September 2026. Canadian immigration rules and fees change often, so always confirm the latest details on the official IRCC website before you apply.

Receiving a Canada visitor visa refusal can be disappointing, especially after spending time and money on your application. The good news is that most refusals happen for a small number of predictable reasons, and many of them can be fixed. In this guide, we explain the most common reasons Canadian visitor visas (also called Temporary Resident Visas or TRVs) are refused, and what you can do to make your next application stronger.

Canada Visitor Visa Fees in 2026

Fee Amount
Visitor visa (per person) CAD 100
Visitor visa, family maximum (5 or more people applying together) CAD 500
Biometrics (per person) CAD 85
Biometrics, family maximum CAD 170

Most adult applicants pay about CAD 185 in total (visa fee plus biometrics). Biometrics are generally valid for 10 years, so if you gave them recently you may not need to pay again. Government fees are not refunded if your application is refused, which is why it is worth getting your application right the first time.

How Does an Officer Decide?

A visa officer must be satisfied that you are a genuine visitor who will leave Canada at the end of your stay. In refusal letters, this usually appears as the officer “not being satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay.” The officer looks at your whole situation, including your ties to Pakistan, your finances, your travel history and the purpose of your trip.

8 Common Reasons for Canada Visitor Visa Refusal

1. Weak Ties to Pakistan

This is the most common reason. If you do not show strong reasons to return, such as stable employment, a business, property or close family in Pakistan, the officer may doubt that you will leave Canada.

How to fix it: Include an employment letter with approved leave, business registration and tax documents, property documents, and your Family Registration Certificate (FRC) to show family members who remain in Pakistan.

2. Insufficient or Unexplained Funds

Officers want to see that you can pay for your trip without difficulty. Low balances, or large deposits made just before applying with no explanation, raise red flags.

How to fix it: Submit at least 6 months of bank statements showing regular income. If you received a large amount, such as from selling property, include documents that show where it came from.

3. Purpose of Visit Is Unclear

A vague reason such as “tourism” with no plan, or a trip that does not match your profile, can lead to refusal.

How to fix it: Write a clear cover letter that explains why you are visiting, where you will stay, how long you will stay and who is paying. Include a simple travel itinerary and hotel booking or invitation letter.

4. Family Ties in Canada

Having close relatives in Canada is not a problem by itself, but if most of your immediate family lives there and few remain in Pakistan, the officer may worry that you intend to stay.

How to fix it: Clearly show your responsibilities and family in Pakistan, and include your host’s status documents and invitation letter.

5. Limited Travel History

First-time travellers can be approved, but without travel history your other documents carry more weight. Previous visits to countries such as the UK, USA, Schengen countries, Australia or the UAE, where you returned on time, help your case.

How to fix it: Include all old passports with previous visas. If you have no travel history, make sure your employment and financial documents are especially strong.

6. Employment Situation

If you are unemployed, recently changed jobs, or your income is low compared to the cost of the trip, the officer may question your reasons to return.

How to fix it: Provide an employment letter showing your position, salary, joining date and approved leave, along with recent salary slips. Government employees should include an NOC.

7. Inconsistent or Incorrect Information

If dates, income, addresses or family details differ between your form and your documents, the officer may doubt your whole application.

How to fix it: Double-check every answer before submitting. Make sure all documents match each other and your application form.

8. Previous Refusals or Immigration Problems

Previous refusals from Canada or other countries, or past overstays, must be declared. Failing to disclose them can be treated as misrepresentation, which can lead to a 5-year ban from applying to Canada.

How to fix it: Always declare previous refusals honestly and explain what has changed since then.

What to Do After a Refusal

  1. Read your refusal letter carefully. It lists the reasons the officer was not satisfied.
  2. Request your GCMS notes. These are the officer’s internal notes on your file and often explain the refusal in more detail. You can request them through an Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) request.
  3. Fix the specific problems. Do not submit the same documents again. Address each refusal reason with new or stronger evidence.
  4. Reapply when your situation has improved. There is usually no mandatory waiting period after a visitor visa refusal, but reapplying immediately with the same documents usually leads to the same result.

A visitor visa refusal generally cannot be appealed. In some cases, a judicial review at the Federal Court of Canada is possible, but strict deadlines apply. Consult a licensed immigration lawyer or consultant if you are considering this.

Processing Time

Processing times change often and depend on the country you apply from. Check the latest time for Pakistan on the official IRCC processing times page, and apply well before your planned travel date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much bank balance do I need for a Canada visitor visa?

There is no fixed minimum. You need to show enough money to cover your flights, accommodation and daily expenses in Canada, while still maintaining your life in Pakistan. A regular income and steady bank history are more convincing than a single large balance.

Can I reapply immediately after a refusal?

Yes, there is usually no waiting period. However, you should only reapply after fixing the reasons for the refusal. Reapplying with the same documents is likely to be refused again.

Does a Canada refusal affect my UK or US visa applications?

Many visa forms, including the UK and US applications, ask about previous refusals from any country. You must answer honestly. A single refusal does not stop you from getting other visas, but hiding it can cause serious problems.

Do I need to pay biometrics again if I reapply?

Not necessarily. Biometrics are generally valid for 10 years. If your biometrics are still valid, you may not need to give them again.
